Let's Get Composting!

Today when X Man comes into our class we will be making compost.
Our homework last week was getting our things ready for composting. We brought things like milk bottles, paper, grass clippings, dead flowers, cardboard, hay, straw, food scraps, eggshells and other interesting things. This will help us to make compost. We didn't need to worry about the worms because X Man is bringing them to add to our compost.
We think that first we will put dirt into the milk bottles that we brought to school. Then we will put the nitrogen and carbon on top of the dirt and then we will put the worms in.
Or we could put the nitrogen and carbon in first and put the dirt on top!

We are not completely sure how we will make compost but we are really excited and looking forward to it!

Learning to Compost

What's stinky and smelly but good for our Eco System? The answer is COMPOST!
The X Man has been coming into our classroom this week to teach us about composting. He has taught us about what to put into our compost and what not to put in it. He also taught us about what is needed in order for things like food scraps to biodegrade. These things are heat, water, bugs and air. That is why food in landfills cannot decompose properly.
We are having a great time learning about these things and Mr X is awesome!

What other things have you learnt about composting?

GOLD MEDAL SIGHTING!

Last week at Tamahere School we were lucky enough to have two special visitors to our school. They were from the Olympic team that recently went to London to compete in the Olympic Games! Polly and Jo talked to us about their adventure and showed us thier gold medals!
We were so lucky, we even got to touch them!

What did you learn from our Olympic Athletes?

A Smashing Time!

We couldn't wait to get to T-Ball on Friday! As we hopped off the bus at Tauwhare School we were all bubbling with excitement to smash the ball. The school greeted us and then breifed us about the day. Our teams were called the Bashers and the Strikers and some of us went into other classes teams. Each team played 6 tough games and we all loved having to compete aainst other schools. It was another terrific T-Ball tournament.
Some of us are going to another tournament on Friday. Good luck!

Absolutely Amazing Ag Day!

Wet, wet animals is what we saw at the start of the day. Puddles splashed over our animals as they were unloaded, we were in for a rough start! Just after the competitions had started the sun came out from behind the clouds. Yay! As the animals started to dry out we all started to have a bit more fun!
We paraded our animals, and made all sorts of Horticultural creations like; decorating cupcakes/biscuits, making vegetable animals, constructing scarecrows and styled some gumboots!
From wet, wet, wet to lots of fun, we all had a great day.

Our Classroom was Trashed!

This morning when we arrived at school we got a big fright because our classrooms were all trashed! There was danger tape around the classrooms and most of our desks were flipped upside down. We noticed that some smart boards had come off the walls and we saw a sea of counters, books and cards all over the floor. Our classroom was in a big mess!
We are all wondering what has happened and have collected evidence to try and work it out.
What do you think happened to our classrooms?

The Amazing Rosie

Farmtastic Rosie came to our school today to teach us about dairy farming. Becky, Rosie, Farmer Tom and Matt were working on the farm and had a few arguments but in the end they were all happy. We learnt some new words like cow pai to farmtastic. We found out that there are lots of nutrients in milk. We also learnt that cows have four stomachs! We really enjoyed Rosies visit to our school, some of us even got to have cuddles!

The Tournament we have been waiting for all term!

Puff puff, we have been exhausted from training for our 7 aside tournament. We can't wait until Thursday next week because that is when we all get to put our skills to the test. We have been practising 4 different sports which are Soccer, Touch Rugby, Hockey and Netball. There will be lots of schools coming to Tamahere and we are looking forward to competing against them. We will be divided into teams that are mixed so we are all on an even playing field. The main aim is to have fun and enjoy our day! We will all try to be fair and enthusiastic.

Cheerio Mrs Charleston!

Miro 13 is making the most of having Mrs Charleston around as next term she is sadly leaving us. She has been chosen to go around schools in Central North Island to assess other schools. Mrs Goodwin will be taking us for most of next term and Mr Preddy will be taking us for two weeks when Mrs Goodwin is in Rarotonga. We are really sad that Mrs Charleston is leaving but we are looking forward to having Mrs Goodwin. We hope Mrs Charleston will have a great time, we will miss her alot! Drip drip, those are our tears we cry as we wave goodbye.

Swip, Swap!

On Friday afternoon, the teacher decided for us to swap desks. We had a little pot that had our names in it and when your name got pulled out you got to move to a desk of your choice. It was better than our last desk change, as last time it was a bit chaotic. We noticed that the boys had chosen to sit on one side and the girls on the other. To choose our group names, a group chose the topic of 'Mr Men and Little Miss..' Our desk names were; Mr Grumpy Redbull, Little Miss Charlestons, Little Miss Teacher Favourites, Little Mr Giggles, Mr Not-Get-Distracted.We are all really pleased with our new seating arrangement!

Mahunga, Pakahiwi, Puku, Hope, Wae Wae!

Kia Ora, sit back on your chair, we will teach you Te Reo Maori. Yesterday we learnt the names of our body parts in Maori. Firstly, we talked about what we already know, like whanau means family, kai means food and that hangi is a feast cooked underground.

What will the Earth be like in 100 years?

Let's go on a ride into the future! Last week we all started thinking about what the earth would be like in 100 years. We could represent what we thought through art, writing, movies, models and booklets.

Reuse Part 3

Here is the final episode of our reuse creations! We had a lot of fun sharing and showing our fantastic inventions. Every single person in our classroom presented their creation and we all did an amazing job!

Reducing, Reusing and Recycling in Raglan

On Thursday the 24th May 2012 we all arrived at school at 8am sharp. We were off to Raglan for the day to find out about how to reduce, reuse and recycle our waste. We were put into different groups to go to different places around Raglan. We picked up rubbish on the beach, went to the XtremeWaste Recycling centre, walked around town looking for things that had been reused and went to visit an artist called Chris Meek that reuses things to make his creations. We all especially enjoyed visiting the artist and going to the Waste centre. There were lots of things to see and learn about.

Reuse, Reuse, Reuse continued...

A week ago, as you may know, we were given homework about reusing our home waste. Some people turned them in early and have shared them. There were some pretty creative ideas. You may have seen some these in part 1 of reuse, reuse, reuse and now we have more creative ideas to share! The pictures say it all.

Reuse, Reuse, Reuse!

For our topic this term we have had to make creations with waste from our homes. We have had very creative ideas so far from light bulbs to plastic boats. We came up with our own ideas and then put our plans into action. We will be making all sorts of things this term where we reuse waste materials.
